The new version replaces ISO 14001:2015 and permanently integrates the 2024 climate protection amendment into the standard. For certified organisations, this marks the beginning of a three-year transition period: all existing certificates must be upgraded to the new version by the end of April 2029.

The revision does not represent a fundamental reorientation. The responsible ISO committee focused on clarifications and refinements of existing requirements. At the same time, the new standard makes current environmental developments such as climate change, biodiversity, and the circular economy binding within the normative text, and follows the new Harmonized Structure, which facilitates integration with ISO 9001 and ISO 45001.

Bernd Dittrich

Key Changes at a Glance

Climate and Biodiversity as Mandatory Topics (Clause 4)

Climate risks are now permanently embedded in the context analysis. In addition, biodiversity and resource availability must be assessed as environmental conditions. The scope of the EMS must now explicitly reflect a life cycle perspective that includes upstream and downstream environmental impacts.

Leadership Bears Greater Responsibility (Clause 5)

Top management must now support all relevant functions, no longer just management functions. The protection of ecosystems and natural resources is now part of the environmental policy. Environmental topics are thus clearly positioned at board level.

Structured Change Management Becomes Mandatory (new Clause 6.3)

Changes with EMS relevance must in future be systematically planned, controlled, and documented. This approach mirrors the requirements in ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 and facilitates the further development of integrated management systems.

Measurability of Environmental Performance (Clauses 6.1, 9)

Demonstrating actual environmental performance takes precedence over mere process documentation. Internal audits must in future define objectives within the audit programme; the management review is structured into three sub-clauses: inputs, process, and outputs.

Extended Supply Chain Approach (Clause 8)

The scope expands from outsourced processes to externally provided products, processes, and services across the entire value chain.

Connection to CSRD and ESG Regulation

For companies already working on CSRD reporting, there is direct synergy potential: the new requirements on climate risks, supply chain, and biodiversity align closely with ESRS reporting obligations. ISO 14001:2026 can be used as a structural backbone for sustainability reporting.

What to Do Now

An early gap analysis creates room for a structured implementation. The transition period until April 2029 may sound long, but with complex management systems it passes more quickly than expected.

Concrete first steps:

Review the context analysis and explicitly incorporate climate risks and biodiversity (Clauses 4.1, 4.2)

Establish and document a change management process in accordance with Clause 6.3

Review environmental objectives for measurability and evidence of effectiveness

Plan the transition certification well ahead of April 2029

Do you have questions about the revision, or would you like to know where your EMS currently stands?

Contact us

On 15 April 2026, the International Organization for Standardization published ISO 14001:2026.
