CO2 balance GHG Protocol Standard

More and more stakeholders expect companies to collect and communicate their greenhouse gas emissions (GHG emissions). Intep has supported the two companies Saint-Gobain Schweiz AG and Sanitas Troesch AG in the development of their GHG balance sheets according to Greenhouse-Gas Protocol (GHG-Protocol) standards. The focus was in particular on the collection of the relevant Scope 3 emissions, which serves as an important basis for determining the downward direction and optimization measures.

Result

GHG balance sheet / Identification of emission factors / Determination of downward direction and climate targets

Saint-Gobain Schweiz AG and Sanitas Troesch AG wanted to have their existing GHG balance sheet checked and, if appropriate and necessary, refine and supplement it. The extended balance sheet according to the GHG protocol standard then served as a basis for identifying potential for improvement and establishing a realistic downward direction. The assignment started with an introductory workshop, in which intep presented the GHG accounting according to the GHG protocol and a possible downward direction and answered the most burning questions of the employees.

The basis of any GHG balance sheet requires consistent and transparent data collection. In cooperation with the two companies, existing data were assessed and in some cases missing data were collected. While there was usually good data available for Scope 1 & 2 emissions, collecting data for Scope 3 emissions posed a major challenge. Intep supported the two companies in particular in creating the data basis for Scope 3 emissions as well as in calculating emissions in the individual subcategories, such as Category 1 – Purchased goods and services. Here, the life cycle assessment expertise of intep was used to determine the emissions of the individual product categories and thus to build a reliable and resilient numerical basis.

The database created helped Saint-Gobain Schweiz and Sanitas Troesch to discover potential for improvement, carry out “quick wins” immediately and finally establish a realistic downward direction and corresponding climate targets.
