Use Life Cycle Assessments to systematically improve your products and combine sustainability with economic value.

Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) provide transparency on the environmental impacts of products, packaging, and services throughout their entire life cycle. They enable companies to identify environmental hotspots, define targeted improvement measures, and make informed sustainability decisions. With our LCA services, we help you generate robust, reliable results and turn them into actionable insights for procurement, research and development, and communication.

What is a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)?

A Life Cycle Assessment, or LCA, evaluates the potential environmental impacts of a product or service throughout its entire life cycle. This includes, among other aspects, raw material extraction, manufacturing, transport, use, and end-of-life.

Unlike a CO₂ balance for companies or a Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), an LCA does not focus solely on greenhouse gas emissions. It also considers factors such as resource consumption and potential impacts on biodiversity across the individual stages of the life cycle. For companies, this provides a sound data basis for making environmental impacts measurable and comparable.

Why a Life Cycle Assessment is now a valuable tool for businesses

Conducting an LCA not only offers strategic advantages for companies, but is also becoming increasingly relevant in light of growing demands for robust and reliable environmental information:

Legal requirements concerning LCAs

Requirements for transparent and verifiable environmental information are increasing in both the EU and Switzerland. As a result, life cycle assessments are becoming more relevant for many companies not only from a strategic perspective, but also from a compliance standpoint.

  • EU – Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR):  With the ESPR (EU 2024/1781), the EU has established a framework for requirements covering almost all physical products. This is increasing the need for robust environmental information at product level.
  • EU – Construction Products Regulation (CPR): The new Construction Products Regulation (EU 2024/3110) introduces environmental and sustainability requirements for construction products. As a result, life cycle assessments in accordance with EN 15804 will become mandatory for many construction products.
  • Switzerland – Federal Act against Unfair Competition (UWG): Since 1 January 2025, climate-related claims must be based on objective and verifiable evidence. This increases the need for sound environmental and life cycle assessment data.

Strategic benefits of LCAs for businesses

Regardless of legal requirements, life cycle assessment helps companies make better-informed decisions about products and services. An LCA provides the data foundation needed to identify optimisation potential and to embed sustainability in product development, procurement, and communication in a well-founded way.

  • Transparency and prioritisation: Life cycle assessment highlights the stages of the value chain in which the greatest environmental impacts occur. This makes it possible to identify hotspots, prioritise actions, and derive targeted improvement measures.
  • Product development and decision-making: An LCA helps companies compare products and materials on a sound basis and supports more reliable strategic decision-making.
  • Communication and market requirements: Unternehmen können Companies are able to communicate environmental impacts more transparently, respond to customer requirements more effectively, and substantiate sustainability claims more credibly.

LCA Calculation for Environmental Product Declarations

LCA results often form the basis for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). If you would like to communicate environmental information in a standardized manner, we would be pleased to support you in the preparation of EPDs.

The process: Preparing a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in four steps

We support companies in preparing life cycle assessments for products and services by following an established methodological approach. This creates a robust basis for evaluating environmental impacts, validating results from a technical perspective, and making well-founded, transparent decisions.

  1. Defining goal and scope: To ensure a targeted assessment, we work with you to define the product system, including the objective of the life cycle assessment and any key questions to be addressed. We also determine the functional unit and the system boundaries.
  2. Building the life cycle inventory and data basis: We then collect the required product data, such as bills of materials, material composition, and energy consumption, and compile the relevant material and energy flows as inputs and outputs across the life cycle.
  3. Assessing environmental impacts and identifying hotspots: Based on the life cycle inventory, we assess the potential environmental impacts of the product or system. This reveals which life cycle stages account for the most significant impacts and which hotspots are particularly relevant.
  4. Interpreting results and deriving measures: Finally, we interpret the results from a technical perspective, identify improvement potential, and derive concrete recommendations for action. In this way, the life cycle assessment becomes a sound basis for further decision-making.

Where required, we also conduct Critical Reviews to support the methodological verification and quality assurance of assessments prepared either internally or by third parties.

For which companies, products, or questions is LCA consulting useful?

LCA consulting is particularly valuable for companies that want to assess the environmental impacts of products and services in a systematic way. Typical use cases include:

  • product comparisons
  • material and design decisions
  • packaging optimisation
  • supply chain assessments
  • the preparation of robust sustainability communication

This is particularly relevant for functions such as product development, procurement, sustainability management, and sales. Depending on the objective, a professionally prepared life cycle assessment can serve as a sound basis for decision-making, help identify environmental hotspots, or provide the foundation for further requirements such as Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
