As an Energy City, Ennetbaden is striving for a forward-looking energy supply. As part of municipal energy planning, we identified the potential of regional energy sources for the municipality and developed measures for their optimized, area-specific use.

The starting point

The Swiss municipality of Ennetbaden, with a population of around 3,700 residents, has been an Energy City since 2012 and is aligned with the Energy Charter for Towns and Municipalities. It also needs to meet the requirements of the cantonal strategy energyAARGAU2. With this in mind, Ennetbaden decided to develop an energy plan in order to tackle a structured transformation towards a sustainable energy supply.

Municipal energy planning includes an analysis of the current energy supply and future development in the context of the region’s existing energy potential. Environmentally friendly energy sources available in the municipal area should be utilized as effectively as possible. The main objective is to coordinate potential energy networks (supply areas) and designate areas where certain energy sources should be prioritized (suitability areas). Intep has many years of experience in municipal energy planning and was a competent partner for Ennetbaden.

Our contribution

First, we modeled data sets on Ennetbaden’s energy balance and consolidated the political framework conditions and objectives of the federal government, canton and municipality. As part of a potential analysis, we worked with relevant stakeholders to define supply areas and suitable areas. Development forecasts and the geographical conditions of the municipality play a key role here.

On this basis, we formulated measures to implement the mapped target state. As a result, Ennetbaden was provided not only with a prepared data basis on energy use and consumption, as well as reliable forecasts on future energy requirements: the municipality now knows the concrete steps to achieve its goals. The centerpiece is the energy plan map with supply and suitability areas accompanied by a detailed report (German). Successful accompanying communication also brought the energy planning closer to the residents.
