Residential Segregation in the City of Zurich and Surrounding Municipalities (German only)

On behalf of Zurich’s Urban Development Department, intep conducted a study on residential segregation in Zurich and its surrounding municipalities between 2010 and 2019. The final report provides the first reliable data on diversity – the opposite of segregation – which is cited as a strength of the city in Zurich’s urban development mission statement.

Residential segregation refers to the uneven distribution of a population group’s residential locations within a specific spatial unit. In this context, intep examined the distribution of different population groups across Zurich’s urban area and their development over time. The study also analyzed how demographic changes and new housing developments have influenced the city’s urban structure.

The findings offer insights into segregation in the city, its neighborhoods, and neighboring communities. The conclusion: despite varying patterns of segregation, overall segregation in Zurich remains comparatively low and has even shown a tendency to decrease.
