Per capita resource consumption in Switzerland is high. While renewable energy and efficiency are important, much more is needed to achieve climate and environmental goals: a conscious decision for a sustainable lifestyle. In the “Living lighter” project, intep supports municipalities in developing resource-saving daily routines together with their residents.

The starting point

Municipalities face major social challenges. To achieve climate and environmental goals, they must contribute to reducing energy and resource consumption in the municipal area. However, sophisticated strategies and concepts and a sustainable building inventories alone are not enough: sustainable development can only be achieved together with the population. This is why many municipalities are committed to raising awareness among residents in areas such as housing, nutrition and mobility.

With this in mind, intep developed the “Living lighter” project. Since 2020, we have been supporting municipalities in initiating sustainable daily practices with selected residents that not only reduce their ecological footprint but can also enhance the quality of life. The project is adapted to the local conditions and goals of the municipality as well as the desired target group.

Our contribution

We support the participating households in tracking their resource consumption using a diary and develop practical measures with them for a more resource-efficient lifestyle. Through two workshops, we promote exchanges between municipal representatives and households as well as among households. During these workshops, we highlight which daily routines consume a lot of resources or heavily impact the environment, raise awareness of the municipality’s goals and provide information about local offers and initiatives.

The “Living lighter” project encourages people to adopt a sustainable lifestyle and strengthens their identification with their own municipality. At the same time, the municipality gains a better understanding of the residents’ needs and can use the insights for further measures and communication. Leichter leben has already been implemented in Baden, Schaffhausen und Wil. Baden was awarded the „Climate Star“ by the Swiss Climate Alliance for its implementation.
