How we can live more sustainably and create sustainable settlements is often described. However, it is often difficult to shape everyday life accordingly and put knowledge into practice. In the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary project “Our settlement – sustainable living”, the city of Zurich is taking up this challenge. At the center of the project is a living lab that is aims to bring practical solutions.

The starting point

The City of Zurich pursues four environmental goals: A climate-neutral city, a healthy urban environment, interconnected nature and intelligent resource use. To achieve these goals, the participation of residents is essential. Therefore, the Umwelt- und Gesundheitsschutz Zürich (UGZ) organization aims to support the population in adopting a more sustainable lifestyle in their daily lives.

Against this background, the pilot project “Our settlement – sustainable living” was launched in 2022. Since 2023, within the framework of a living lab, ways to achieve a more sustainable daily life have been researched and tested in three Zurich settlements. Intep is supporting the project together with the city’s Waste Management + Recycling department, the RCE Zurich association, the Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences OST and the Institute for Applied Media Sciences (IAM) at Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW).

Our contribution

Together with UGZ, intep developed the pilot phase of the project and significantly shaped the living lab approach. In the living lab, citizens, settlement administrators and researchers from Zurich institutions interact and bring in individual challenges, ideas, and needs. This collaboration aims to develop concrete, feasible solutions. The scientific accompaniment serves to analyze the success factors for participation and to investigate how the impact of the newly created solutions can be measured. The living lab focuses on the themes of waste and consumption.

Thanks to our many years of experience in designing and implementing participatory processes, we were able to motivate various partners from civil society, science and the public sector to participate in the project. We coordinate this multi-stakeholder project. In this way, intep supports the city of Zurich on multiple levels in achieving its climate and environmental goals.
