TKB: Mobility surveys for effective climate protection

Client

Thurgauer Kantonalbank

Project period

Since 2021

Results

Reliable data on the mobility behavior of the workforce
Identification of motivating factors and obstacles
Recommendations for reducing traffic-related emissions

For effective climate protection, Thurgauer Kantonalbank relies on scientific objectives and measures based on reliable data. A bi-annual survey of all employees provides reliable figures in the area of mobility. Intep accompanies the surveys, integrates the results into the annual life cycle assessment and provides recommendations for traffic reduction.

The starting point

Thurgauer Kantonalbank (TKB) has been rooted in the canton of Thurgau for over 150 years. It offers comprehensive financial services for private individuals, companies, commercial enterprises and the public sector. Limiting climate change is a core element in the bank’s sustainability strategy. This defines the topics of “climate and greenhouse gas emissions” and “sustainable finance” as essential and sets corresponding targets. TKB’s overarching goal is to achieve “net zero” greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 – across all scopes.

Since 2013, we have been advising TKB on environmental issues and supporting it in implementing and monitoring an environmental management system and its climate strategy. We developed a customized and proven accounting tool with which we quantify TKB’s greenhouse gas emissions annually. We also supported their submission of short-term science-based climate targets for Scope 1 and 2 to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), which were successfully validated in 2024.

A survey is conducted every two years to obtain reliable emission values and a picture of the mood in the mobility sector. Intep accompanies the survey, evaluates it and develops measures in line with the targets set by TKB.

Unser Beitrag

The survey records the volume of business trips and commuter traffic around TKB according to kilometers driven and the chosen means of transport. In accordance with the objectives, the shift to electric cars, the number of working days in home office and the use of virtual meetings are also recorded. At the same time, obstacles that employees perceive as hindering more environmentally friendly mobility are identified.

We subject the data to a plausibility check, process the results and interpret them in the context of the TKB reduction pathway. Based on this, we develop recommendations to reduce traffic-related emissions. The survey thus enables TKB to continuously and reliably monitor its environmental performance in the area of mobility and to implement specific and particularly effective measures for climate protection.
