What changes are the energy and climate transition bringing to mobility and the workplace? In the SWICE research project, intep contributes practical, real-world perspectives. As part of a focused advisory service, we supported two organizations in identifying key challenges and opportunities in corporate mobility—with a particular emphasis on how to encourage employees to adopt more sustainable behaviors.

The starting point

SWICE (Sustainable Well-being for the Individual and the Collectivity in the Energy Transition) is an interdisciplinary research project within the SWEET program (SWiss Energy research for the Energy Transition) of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy. The goal of the program is to promote key innovations to support the implementation of the Energy Strategy 2050 and achieve national climate targets. The project is being carried out by a consortium of 14 partners, led by the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

As a consortium partner, intep is part of Work Package 6, “New Work, Mobility and Energy,” which is led by the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU). This multi-year research project explores how sustainable and efficient lifestyles can be achieved while simultaneously improving quality of life in residential and mixed-use developments. The focus lies on the effects of new forms of work, mobility behavior, and corporate framework conditions on energy consumption.

Our expertise contributes to various aspects of the project—among others, the analysis of Swiss building and district labeling and certification systems with a view to the role of mobility. With our impulse consulting on the topic of “corporate mobility management,” we made a hands-on contribution to SWICE. The aim was to raise awareness of key mobility issues within organizations and to identify concrete opportunities for action in an operational context.

Our contribution

Together with PLANAR, we carried out two focused consultations on corporate mobility management—one for the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) and another for an internationally active pharmaceutical company. These consultations were embedded in SWICE’s real-world laboratory approach, which involves collaboration with companies, municipalities, and other stakeholders under real-life conditions—such as at the Suurstoffi site in Risch-Rotkreuz.

Each consultation began with an analysis of site-specific mobility data—for example, the distribution of public transport, cycling, and car use, parking space utilization, and the practicality of public transport options. This was complemented by an assessment of organizational framework conditions, such as travel expense policies, working models, or incentive systems. Additionally, the current implementation status of relevant measures was systematically recorded and evaluated based on their potential.

We identified concrete courses of action—for instance, promoting active mobility, managing parking spaces strategically, or involving employees in the process. A central focus was on how to drive lasting changes in routines—through incentives, communication, or behavioral economics strategies. Where needed, we also support the in-depth development and implementation of selected measures.

Both organizations received a structured foundation for decision-making—serving as the basis for effective, context-specific mobility strategies with clear implementation relevance.
